Biomechanics of Lower Limb Prosthetic Alignment

This course is designed for certified O&P practitioners and physical therapists. This course will focus on the theory and rationale behind bench, static and dynamic alignment for individuals with transtibial (TT), transfemoral (TF), and hip disarticulation (HD) amputations. Lecture and demonstrations will be offered to participants on the use of appropriate technology to enhance the three phases of alignment. Lectures on normal and pathological gait for TT, TF and HD amputations will be presented. Demonstrations on the use of the 3D Lasar Posture to enhance your clinical practice will be featured.


Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course the participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between the functions provided by the various lower limb components in gait.
  • Identify the critical steps in bench, static and dynamic alignment
  • Explain the alignment protocols for bench and static for various knees and feet components
  • Compare normal physiologic gait to prosthetic gait deviations.
  • Identify tools to enhance prosthetic alignment.


Presenter:

Mark Edwards, CP, MHPE

Mark Edwards is the Director of Professional and Clinical Services for Ottobock North America. He was formerly the Director of Prosthetics Education at Northwestern University’s Prosthetics-Orthotics Center. He has his Master’s degree in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago and has been certified in prosthetics by the American Board for Certification since 1985.
